Blogmas Day 8 - Secret Santa

Tuesday, December 08, 2015 0 Comments A+ a-

For Blogmas 2015 I will be posting every single day until Christmas, so make sure you are part of the festive fun and come back everyday!

17 Days

Just in case you don't know what Secret Santa is I will give you a brief explanation. Secret Santa is where everyone gets allocated one person, and then they have to buy a Christmas gift for that person. It is a normal thing to do in large groups, such as, school classes, work, group of friends, or even family.

The bonuses of Secret Santa is that everyone will receive a gift, but also it keeps costs down because you only have to buy a gift for one person - not the entire group. It also adds a surprise element because you don't know who is buying your gift.

How I do Secret Santa with my friends is simple. We all pick a name out of a hat, whoever's name we pull out is the person we buy a gift for. We put a few rules into place to make sure everything is fair. We open our presents and then we celebrate Christmas. This makes sure everyone gets a gift, but keeps the cost down because we only have to buy a gift for one friend, not the entire friend group which could become very expensive.

There are a few rules you should put into place to prevent problems...

You should put a price range into place, e.g. £10 - £15 (of course you can set the amount depending on peoples budget). This is to make sure everyone gets an 'equal' present. For example someone could spend £5 on a present, and someone else could spend £100+ which isn't very fair. The price rule also keeps the cost down because no one should go (too far) past the limit.

Set a deadline so everyone knows when they have to give out the presents. Make sure it isn't the very last day you will see each other before Christmas in case someone forgets, or is off school/work due to illness etc. If I knew the last day I would see everyone before Christmas is the 18th December, I would recommend setting the deadline to the 15th December.

Make sure everyone keeps it a secret. The whole point of doing Secret Santa is so you don't know who you will receive a gift from. So if everyone tells each other you will soon find out and it ruins the surprise. This rule doesn't really matter as such, it just ruins the surprise.

You shouldn't allow people to swap who they buy a gift for. Soon everyone would be able to work out who is buying a present for who and the whole point of it is to remain anonymous (which means you are breaking the rule above). It also isn't very nice if the person finds out nobody actually wanted to buy them a gift because everyone kept swapping - Secret Santa is to make sure that no one is left out. If you don't like the person you are buying a gift for you should still keep to the rules, but get something simple, like a box of chocolates.
